Summary

An energy label and ecodesign measures are being planned. An updated preparatory study has been prepared by the European Commission with assistance of the Joint Research Centre's Institute for Prospective Technological Studies (JRC-IPTS). First working documents (draft regulations) were discussed at the Ecodesign Consultation Forum on July 2nd 2014.

Topten shows the most energy efficient beverage coolers, ice cream freezers and supermarket freezers. The energy efficiency index (EEI) is calculated according to the working documents. Their energy consumption is tested according to harmonized European standards (in most cases EN ISO 23953). Note that values in catalogues and on manufacturer websites cannot be compared because manufacturers generally test according to their own protocols (not published, not harmonized).

In short, Topten recommends:

1. To set label classes in a way that ...

  • ... current best available models are in class C, allowing classes B and A for future development. Only then is the label equipped to reward efficiency improvements (innovation) over 5-7 years into the future.
  • ... ecodesign tiers and label classes match.
2. To learn about energy performance of commercial vertical static-air cabinets by setting product information requirements in the regulation covering either Lot 12 or Lot 13.
Global Warming Potential GWP 3. To promote cabinets using climate-friendly refrigerants by including a praising note or icon on the energy label.
